18/10/2005 Boston Terriers Nonsporting Group
History Of The Breed: The Boston Terrier is the result of the crossing between the Old English Toy Bulldog with the white English Terrier, with a hint of French Bulldog. Through inbreeding, mutations, and accidents, the Boston Terrier became what we recognize today. The breed was origionally developed out of curiosity, and as a new fighting dog. However, the breed never gained popularity as a fighter and instead became popular as a pet for women. The origional Boston was bred as a "mans" dog and did not look anything like what we know today. The origional breeders would most likely see todays version as effeminate. The ancestor of all Boston Terriers was a dog named Hooper's Judge. Judge lived during the 1860s and was owned by Mr. Robert C. Hooper of Boston. Mr Hooper purchased Judge from a man named William O'Brien, who had imported the dog from Europe. The Boston Terrier was not officially regocnized by the American Kennel Club until 1893.
Breed Temperament: Although the Boston was origionally bred to be a fighting dog, they do not act like it. As a matter of fact, the breed is known in the dog community as the "American Gentleman." They may not be fighters, but they can take care of themselves when they feel their families or themselves threatened. Their disposition is gentle and they are great with kids. They are a very playful and friendly breed, and they get along great with other pets. They make excellent apartment dogs because of their small size. They are very intelligent, if your not careful.. they will out think you, this makes them pretty easy to train. They are very affectionate with their families and extremely alert. They are great watchdogs and are quick to alert the family to anything amiss. The Boston Terrier also has a unique sense of humor, they will keep you laughing, and always loves to play. They also love to be with their families on outings. Bostons are also notorious for burying themselves in blankets. If you get more than one, expect to be buried under them when resting. Bostons love sleeping on their masters. I think most Bostons think of themselves as furry little people!
Breed Facts: Boston Terriers are extremely easy to care for and require very little grooming. Because of their short muzzles, they do not do well in extreme heat. Also, because of their short coats, they don't do to well in extreme cold. They require a controlled environment to thrive. So they do best as "inside" dogs. They are very active dogs and require at least an hour of excersize a day. That's usually not a problem though, because they aren't that big and can run around the house fairly easily. Bostons are also known for snoring because of their short muzzles. This also causes them to "reverse sneeze" at times, which sounds like a snorting attack. The best way to releave this is to rub their throats and blow into their nose. This breed typically lives 13 to 15 years.
Notes: I highly recommend this breed for anyone who truely wants to bond with their pet, yet doesn't want a huge dog. Because they aren't that big, it is easy to take them around with you. They make excellent traveling companions. Mature Bostons are great pets for older people. Grooming requirements are simply a bath now and then and a clip of the nails. Boston's also have strong jaws, so make sure to get them tuff toys they can not chew up too easily.
