29/10/2005 Bichon Frise
Non Sporting
History: This breed originated in France and has been documented since the fourteenth century. French sailors brought examples home from Tenerife in the Canary Islands, hence it's alternate name.. Tenerife bichon. It is thought to have arrived in Tenerife via Italian traders, who bartered the dogs for other goods. As with all bichon breeds, it was first developed in the Mediterranean region during the Middle Ages. Origionally dubbed the Tenerife bichon, it was a favorite of French nobility during the 1500's. By the 1800's, it had become a common dog in France and was often seen accompanying organ grinders or performing in circuses. It received its new name in the 1930's. It was first seen in the U.S. in the mid-twentieth century.
Breed Description: This is a small, compact, and sturdy dog with a powder puff appearance. Its skull is rounded and the muzzle is shorter than the skull, with a strong lower jaw. The black or dark brown eyes are round with a dark halo around them. The drop ears are set high and forward on the head. A well-plumed, medium-length tail curls over the back. The coat is double with a sof, dense undercoat and a medium-length, cottony outer coat. There is profuse hair on the head, beard, mustache, ears, and tail. The coloring is usually white, but can be buff, cream, or apricot around the ears or on the body. This breed is 9.5 to 11.5 inches tall and weighs about 10 to 14 pounds.
Temperament: This dog is gentle, affectionate, and playful with a jaunty, cheerful additude. It is great with kids and a favorite among senior citizens.
Energy Level: Moderate
Notes: Because it grows hair, this dog is great for people with allergies, however, it requires regular grooming. This dog also requires regular attention and socialization with people and other dogs. Bichons do well in the city or in a suburban home.
