30/10/2005 Lhasa Apso
Non Sporting
History: This breed is one of three companion, or non sporting, breeds native to Tibet. Dogs of this type were known in Tibet for hundreds of years, where they gave warning of intruders at monasteries and temples. The first Lhasa Apsos came to the U.S. in 1933 as gifts from the Dalai Lama to an american naturalist who was visiting Tibet.
Description: This breed is a small but hardy dog that is longer than it is tall. It has a medium-length muzzle that is about one-third the length of the head. The eyes are dark brown and the nose is black. The ears are pendant and the feet are catlike. The tail is carried over its back and has a kink at the end. The coat is heavy, straight, and long. Abundant hair on the head falls over the eyes, and there are whiskers and a beard. There is heavy feathering on the legs, neck, and tail. Height is about 10 to 11 inches, and it weighs 14 to 15 pounds.
Temperament: This breed is an intelligent and watchful dog. Lhasas are very affectionate with friends and family, but wary of stangers. This breed can also be uncomforable with children.
Energy Level: Low
Notes: This breed does well in apartments. Because it grows hair, it is great for people with allergies, but it requires lots of regular grooming. This breed needs attention, training, and socialization.
