Working Group
History: Other names for this breed are: Alsatian, German Shepherd, GSD, and Deutscher Schaferhund. Obviously this breed originated in Germany. The German Shepherd dog is descended from old farm and herding dogs. This is a fairly new breed. It was developed in the early part of the twentieth century for herding and police and military use. These dogs are popular companions in the U.S. and elsewhere. They have also been used as guide dogs and rescue dogs.
Breed Description: This is a large, muscular breed that is longer than it is tall. The ears are large and erect. The nose is black, and the eyes are dark and almond shaped. The neck is long and strong. The tail is set low and curves up slightly. The double coat has a short, dense undercoat and a straight, full outer coat, which may be slightly wavy. The hair is longer at the neck and thighs. German Shepherd come in a variety of colors, although some registries will not accept white versions of the breed. These dogs are 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 60 to 140 pounds.
Temperament: These dogs are self-confident and even tempered. They are affectionate and playful with friends and family but reserved with strangers, although they tend to warm up quickly. German Shepherds are intelligent, highly trainable, and great with kids and other animals.
Energy Level: High
Notes: German Shepherds adapt to city, suburban, or rural life. They tend to do best with an active family or individual who provide them with ample exercise. Socialization and training are recommended. They are succeptable to bloat, epilepsy, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, hip and elbow dysplasia, and panostetis. They make excellent guard dogs. 评论 (7)
