Hound Group
History: This breed originated in France during the sixteenth century. They were derived from the dwarf version of the Saint Hubert hound. They were used to hunt small game with the hunter on foot. Theses dogs were kept mostly by nobility, but after the French Revolution they became popular among commoners. These dogs are still used to hunt, and also as companions. They are very popular in the U.S. as companion dogs.
Breed Description: Basset Hounds are medium sized dogs with short legs. They are heavy-boned dogs. The head is large and wide and covered with loose wrinkled skin. The ears are long, broad, and set low. Their lower eyelids droop. The muzzle is deep and the nose is dark with large nostrils. The coat is short and smooth in any hound color. This breed is usually 14 inches tall and weighs 50 to 65 pounds.
Temperament: This is a friendly, mild, and easygoing breed. They get along with almost everyone, including other dogs. These dogs have a strong hunting instinct and will roam. This is also a very vocal breed. Basset Hounds can be very stubborn dogs and tend to do what they want when they want if not properly trained.
Energy Level: Low to Moderate.
Notes: Basset Hounds require regular eye and ear cleanings. They are succeptable to bacteria in these places. They do well with an individual or family and can adapt to city or country living. コメント (1 件)
