2005/11/9 Bulldog
Non-Sporting
History: This breed originated in Great Britain and is quite different today than the early version of the breed. These dogs were originally developed to hold bulls for butchers and was later used for the blood sport of bull baiting. This sport was outlawed in 1835 and the need for bulldogs ceased. Fanciers worked to keep the breed alive as a companion, placing a lot of value on its gentle temperament and distinctive looks rather than on its fighting skills.
Breed Description: The bulldog is a medium-size but massive dog with a heavy, thick-set body. The head is large, broad, and square. The forehead is flat and the face is very short with a short, upturned muzzle. The massive jaws are square and the lower jaw is undershot with thick pendant chops. The breed has dark eyes, a black nose, and small rose ears. The chest is broad and deep with a short back. The naturally short tail is straight or screwed. the skin is soft and loose, especially at the head, neck, and shoulders. The coat is short and it may be brindle, white, red, fawn, yellow, or piebald. Bulldogs are usually 12 to 16 inches tall and weigh 40 to 50 pounds.
Temperament: This is a gentle, stable, and affectionate breed. Although bulldogs are courageous and capable of great power, they get along well with just about anyone. However, these dogs tend to snort and drool and tend to have chronic flatulence (they fart a lot)! They also can be scrappy with other dogs.
Energy Level: Low
Notes: This breed is adaptable and do well in an apartment as well as in the country. They need protection from heat and cold. Their short muzzles make it difficult for them to breath in hot weather and their short coats make them succeptable to cold weather. They also need socialization with other dogs as puppies so they won't be as scrappy with them as adults. As with any dog training is a good idea. Bulldogs can be stubborn. It is important to clean between the wrinkles on their face on a regular basis, as bacteria can grow there. If you plan to breed bulldogs, you may need to plan a C-section as they have trouble delivering their puppies due to their large heads.
It is also important to know that these dogs can be succeptable to several health problems such as; Allergies, brachycephalic syndrome, eye problems, elongated soft palate, hip dysplasia, reproductive problems, and a small trachea.
