18/12/2005 Great Dane
Working Group
Breed History: Another name for this breed is Deutshe dogge. It was developed in Germany as a boar hound in the sixteenth century and is believed to be a cross of the mastiff and the Irish wolfhound. The Great Dane was proclaimed the national breed of Germany in 1876.
Breed Description: The Great Dane is a very large, muscular, and squarely built dog with a big, rectangular head and drop ears that can be cropped erect or left natural drop. The dog's dark eyes are almond shaped, and its tail is long and tapered. The breed's short, smooth coat is fawn, blue, black, harlequin, brindle, or a mantle patten (like a boston). Great Danes are massive dogs at a height of 28 to 32 inches minimum and weight no less than 100 to 130 pounds.
Temperament: These dogs are extremely friendly, playful, good-natured, and affectionate. (THANK GOD! I'd hate to run into a mean one!:)
Energy Level: Moderate
Notes: Great Danes are great dogs for rural or suburban living situations. However, they can adapt to city life. They require a fenced yard, training, and socialization. It is very imparative to train and socialize these dogs because of their size.
Health Concerns: Bloat, hip dysplasia, osteosarcoma, wobbler syndrome. TrackbacksWeblogs that reference this entry
