Breed History: These dogs are also refered to as Old English Mastiffs. They originated in Great Britain. This is an ancient breed that is believed to descend from the Tibetan mastiff. They were developed to guard, fight, and as companion dogs. Although their history is a bit cloudy, this breed may have existed in Great Britain for more than two thousand years.
Breed Discription: The mastiff is a powerful, heavily boned, and massive dog with a broad, rectangular-shaped head; a short muzzle; and small, V-shaped drop ears. It has a broad dark nose and brown eyes. The chest is deep and wide and the long tail tapers. The short, smooth coat is fawn, apricot, or brindle with fawn or apricot as the background color, with a dark mask. These dogs are 27.5 to 30 inches tall and there is no standard weight. However, they usually weigh over 100 pounds.
Temperament: This is a patient, stoic, calm, and loyal breed. It makes an affectionate family dog.
Energy Level: Low
Notes: The mastiff is adaptable to most living situations, equally suited to city, suburban, or country life. It may be too large for a small apartment. Mastiffs require attention, financial ability to provide giant-size needs, socialization.
