1/8/2006 Afghan Hound
Hound Group
Breed History: This breed origionated in Afghanistan, hence the name. The history of this breed is uncertain, although it is believed to have been used for hunting by tribal chiefs. It was developed to course prey with a hunter on horseback. Because these tribes were isolated, the breed was kept very pure and was unknown to outsiders until the nineteenth century. Some even believe that the Afghan hound is the origional sighthound. It was first brought to England by British officers in the early twentieth century and arrived in the U.S. by the 1920s.
Breed Description: The Afghan is a large, powerful, squarely built, and agile dog. It is elegant looking with a long, refined head and neck and long, tapered muzzle. It has a black nose; dark, triangular eyes; and long, pendant ears. It has very large feet, prominent pelvic bones, and a long, ringed or curved tail. The coat is long and silky except on the face and back, where the hair is short. The ears and feet are feathered and there is a long, silky topknot on the head. It can be any color. This is a truely beautiful breed. They are 25 to 27 inches tall and weigh between 50 and 60 pounds.
Temperament: The Afghan hound is a strong-willed and dignified dog. It is aloof with stangers but playful and affectionate with family. Because of its independent nature, it is difficult to train. If socialized it does well with children, but is never trustworthy with small animals as it has a strong prey drive.
Energy Level: Moderate
Notes: This breed is best with a patient, active family that lives in the suburbs or country. They require exercise, a fenced yard, grooming on a regular basis, to be leashed on walks, and socialization.
Health Concerns: Cryptorchidism or monorchidism, eye problems, heart problems, hip dysplasia. TrackbacksWeblogs that reference this entry
