20/01/2006 Chinese Crested
Toy Group
Breed History: Although there is little information on the origin of the Chinese Crested, it is believed to descend from African hairless dogs that were brought to Asia by traders and then bred down. It may be related to other hairless dogs. Chinese sailors often used the dogs on their ships as ratters because the lack of fur meant that they did not harbor fleas. In addition, the warm bodies of hairless dogs were believed to hold medicinal properties and the dogs were often used in much the same way as a hot water bottle on sore spots. The breed was commonly found in port cities. It first arrived in the U.S. in the nineteenth century.
Breed Description: The Chinese Crested is a small, fine-boned dog. The color of its almond-shaped eyes and nose complement its coat. It has large, erect ears and a tapered muzzle. It comes in two varieties: the hairles and the powderpuff. The hairless variety has hair only on its head, feet, and tail. Much like a horse. The powderpuff is completely covered in long hair and resembles a Yorkie or Silky terrier. It comes in any color or combination of colors. The hairless usually has gray and pink skin. They are 11 to 13 inches tall and weigh no more than 10 to 14 pounds.
Temperament: The Chinese Crested is an active, playful, inquisitive dog that is friendly to everyone. As long as it is socialized, it does well with children and other animals.
Energy Level: Moderate
Notes: This breed does best in a city or suburban home. They need attention, protection from sunburn, skin care, and socialization.
Health Concerns: Dental problems, Legg-Perthes disease, liver shunts, and PRA.
