Giant Schnauzer

Image hosting by Photobucket

Working Group

Breed History: The Giant Schnauzer originated in the Wurtemberg and Bavaria regians of Germany, where cattlemen wanted a larger version of the standard schnauzer to use for driving cattle. It was created by breeding standard schnauzers with Great Danes, rough-haired sheepdogs, and Bouvier des Flandres. It was later used as a guard dog at breweries and stockyards, as well as a police dog and, in WW I, military dog. The breed was threatedned during WW II, but was revitalized by fanciers.

Breed Description: The Giant Schnauzer is a large, powerful, squarely built dog. It resembles the Standard Schnauzer except for it's size. IT has a long, strong head, dark brown eyes, and a black nose. The ears are cropped erect or naturally button. The tail is docked short and carried high. There is a wiry, dense double coat, with a beard and heavy eyebrows, which is salt and pepper or black. They are 23.5 to 27.5 inches and weigh anywhere from 55 to 80 pounds.

Temperaments: The Giant Schnauzer is a brave, even-tempered, and intelligent dog. It is alert and protective. Although it is playful and gentle with friends and family, it can react if provoked. This dog should be supervised with children and other animals.

Energy Level: Moderate

Notes: This breed does well with an active family in a rural or suburban home. They require execise, positive training, professional grooming, and socialization.

Health Concerns: Albinism, episepsy, eye problems, hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and renal problems.

Great website, however you have the giant schnauzer listed as part of the herding group, when it is classified by the AKC as a member of the working group. My giant (Angus) is black, about 28.5" at the shoulders and 105 lbs - very muscular. While he is very territorial and lets loose with an intimidating loud bark when someone comes near our yard, he is gentle and very affectionate with family members. I will probably never own a different breed, but caution that this may not be the ideal dog for a first time dog owner, someone who cannot offer daily exercise nor a person unwilling to train and socialize the dog while it is still a puppy. They are very intelligent and can be strong willed, if they are not taught there place in the household pecking order while growing up. They live a longer than average life than some other large breeds (11-12 years) and have relatively feww health problems. They make an excellent guard and watchdog. Thanks for all the info you have provided on all the breeds on your site!
